Always on

Keep your agents running through closed laptops, dropped connections and reboots, and know where your data lives.

Agents are most useful when they keep working while you're away. Here's what keeps them going.

Sessions outlive the app

Your sessions run on the computer that hosts them, not in the app you're looking at. Closing the app, locking your phone or losing the connection doesn't stop them.

If that computer restarts, your sessions come back stopped, with their history. Each one picks up where it was on your next message. Agents start again by themselves.

Start with the computer

  • Desktop app: Keep running in the background (on by default) starts supermux when you log in.
  • Linux server: the installer sets up a user service that also runs while you're logged out.
  • Mac server: the installer sets up a LaunchAgent, which starts when you log in. Turn on Automatic Login for a Mac without a keyboard.

Stay awake

A sleeping computer can't run agents. In the desktop app, Keep this computer awake is on by default. On a server it's off, because servers usually don't sleep. See Desktop app.

Restart supermux

Settings ▸ System ▸ Restart broker restarts supermux on the computer you've picked. Your apps reconnect when it's back. It works when supermux runs as a service, which is the default.

Where your data lives

Everything supermux keeps is in ~/.mux on the computer that runs your agents:

FolderWhat's in it
~/.mux/state/Settings, the list of paired devices, session history.
~/.mux/worktrees/Worktrees for sessions that work in git repositories.
~/.mux/domains/The shared memory.
~/.mux/workspace/Your Agents' home folders.
~/.mux/agent-memory/Each Agent's own memory and character.

Each agent's own sign-in stays in that agent's usual folder, like ~/.claude or ~/.codex.

Disk space

supermux doesn't delete work behind your back. Worktrees stay until you remove them: tick Also delete worktree when you archive a workspace, or clean up in Settings ▸ Worktrees.

Settings ▸ Storage is about the app on your device: the pictures, videos and files it has cached. Clear frees that space; it doesn't touch anything on your computer.

Docker notes

  • The web app is on port 8787, and your projects go in ./workspace.
  • supermux's data and Claude Code's sign-in are kept in Docker volumes, so they survive updates.
  • The relay isn't set up. Add your own address, or the relay, to reach it from outside.
