Troubleshooting

What the messages mean and what to do about them.

Find the message you're seeing. Quoted text is exactly what supermux shows.

Installing and starting

Windows says it protected your PC. The installer isn't signed yet. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

"Couldn't start the local host. Is the broker able to run on this machine?" The desktop app couldn't start supermux on this computer. Click Try again. If it keeps failing, Show log opens the log, which is in ~/.mux/state/desktop-host.log.

The tray says "supermux can't start". Same as above: Show log shows why.

"supermux is already running on this computer (set up outside the app)." supermux was installed from the terminal earlier. Choose Manage it to let the app take it over, or Leave it alone.

The server service doesn't start. On Linux, read the log with journalctl --user -u supermux -n 50. On a Mac, tail -f ~/.mux/state/supermux.err.log.

supermux stops when I log out of the server. Run loginctl enable-linger $USER once.

"Developer tools not installed" or "Git not installed". Agents work without git, but worktrees, diffs and change tracking need it. Click Install…. On Linux, install git with your package manager, for example sudo apt install git.

Pairing

"Couldn't read a token from that — paste the full pairing link (it contains ?t=…)." The app couldn't read what you scanned or pasted. On a computer you've already paired, open Settings ▸ Devices ▸ Add device and use that link or QR code.

"That broker rejected the token. Check the host is reachable and the link is current." The link was revoked, or the computer can't be reached right now. Make a new link, and check the computer is on.

"The host rejected the pairing — the claim is expired or already used." The QR code from Pair a device… works once, for 10 minutes. Make a new one.

"Pairing link is invalid or expired. Generate a new one." The link was revoked. Make a new one in Settings ▸ Devices.

"Pair this browser" This computer already has paired devices, so a new browser needs a link. Get one from Settings ▸ Devices ▸ Add device on a device you've paired, and paste it.

Connection

"Can't reach" your computer, with "Is the computer awake and logged in?" Your computer is asleep, off, or offline. Wake it up. To keep it reachable, turn on Keep this computer awake in the desktop app.

A message stays on "Sending…". You're offline. It goes out by itself when you're back.

"Can't reach the broker" in a browser. The computer that runs supermux may be starting up, asleep or out of reach from this network. Nothing is wrong with the browser. Click Check again in a moment.

Agents and sessions

"… isn't installed on this computer. Install it in Settings ▸ Providers, then try again." Install that agent first, in Settings ▸ Providers.

"This is taking longer than expected. Check Settings ▸ Providers for progress." An agent install is still running. Settings ▸ Providers shows how it's going.

Codex sign-in doesn't finish. Turn on Allow device code login in ChatGPT under Settings → Security, then try again.

"Usage limit reached on … — no other … account is available". That account is at its limit and there's no other to move to. Add another account in Settings ▸ Accounts, or wait for the limit to reset. See Accounts and usage limits.

A message I sent while the agent was working seems ignored. It's queued: the agent reads it when its current turn ends. Codex takes it in right away.

"Not responding" The agent's program stopped. Your next message starts it again, and the conversation picks up where it was.

There's no worktree option in the launcher. Worktrees need the top folder of a git repository. A subfolder, or a folder holding several repositories, runs in place.

An attachment shows "Retry". Its upload failed. Tap it to try again, or remove it to send without it. Files over 500 MB are refused.

I can't drag files onto the chat on my phone. Drag and drop works on the desktop and in browsers. On a phone, use +.

Notifications

I don't get notifications. Check that:

  • the session isn't muted,
  • you don't have that chat or the session list open on another device, which keeps every device quiet,
  • notifications are allowed for supermux. On Android 13 and later, the app asks; in a browser, choose Enable notifications for agent replies.

Other

"This client does not draw … yet" or "Update Supermux to open this view". Your app is older than supermux on your computer. Update the app.

"The terminal engine didn't load". Reload the app, or the browser tab. It usually means the tab was open since before an update.

The anonymous usage events switch is greyed out. It was turned off with MUX_TELEMETRY or DO_NOT_TRACK on that computer, which always wins.
